Sir Arthur Bliss
Sir Arthur Bliss (1891-1975) composer and
conductor is the subject of the latest
biography by Paul Spicer who will reappraise
the music of this immensely talented musician
who was Master of the Queen’s Music for 22
years. Bliss composed music in almost every
genre and is too often overlooked nowadays.
Paul Spicer’s biography will go a long way to
redress that balance.
The Jenny Roberts Lecture
Appreciation by Mary Whittaker
Paul is currently researching the life & works of this composer,
who, despite being Master of the Queen’s Musick for a couple of
decades is now remembered chiefly for dramatic titles to his
early compositions, e.g. The Colour Symphony, and his works for
Brass bands. Paul’s talk was extremely informative, and was
illustrated by many recordings – some not widely available. By
the end of the evening we had all discovered that Bliss was a
versatile and approachable composer, well worth exploring
further.
